What the F#&k are macros + how do I count them?!

Macronutrients (macros) are nutrients required in significant amounts in our diet. They are protein, carbohydrate + fat.

They are called MACROnutrients because our bodies need them in large amounts in order to function optimally.

All food contains a certain number of protein, fat +/or carbs. The number of each macros determines the total number of calories in a food item. But be weary NOT ALL MACROS ARE CREATED EQUAL!

But how much am I supposed to eat?

Well, it depends. I know this is not the answer you want to hear but it’s true. Your macro balance depends on your goals, lifestyle, health history + genetic makeup. These are going to determine the appropriate amount of macros to consume daily.

Whether you want to lose weight, gain lean muscle mass or train for a Spartan Race your macros should be specific to you. Just because a certain number of macros works for your friend doesn’t mean it’s right for you.

How do I count them?

I’m a big fan of MyFitnessPal – it’s a great user friendly app that allows you to track your macros + has some great resources as well.
